How It Started:
This project began when the clients reached out asking about our larger one-bedroom models. They already knew they wanted a wider footprint than anything we’d built before. Pushing past our typical 12′ and 14′ widths into a full 16-foot-wide layout. It was a big step up in size, and a perfect match for what they wanted to create.
They were in the middle of a major life transition: selling their home on Vancouver Island, moving inland to Edgewood, and planning to downsize into a simpler, more modern space they could retire into. Their goal was to land on a property large enough for a shop down the road, while keeping their main home efficient, comfortable, and low-stress to maintain.
They also had a real timeline to work with. Their temporary plan was to live in a travel trailer until the new home was ready but they wanted to avoid spending a full winter in it. That put a clear window on the project: design it, build it, and install it before the weather turned.
After going back and forth on layout ideas, budgets, and priorities, we landed on a plan that checked every box. A 16′ × 36′ home with a mudroom addition, large kitchen, oversized bathroom, and thoughtful storage throughout. The design work was a true collaboration, and the finished layout reflects exactly how they want to live day-to-day.
The Build:
The design came together as a 16′ × 36′ home with a dedicated mudroom addition on the back side. That extra space gave them a covered entry, room for mechanical and laundry, and freed up valuable square footage inside the main living area. With the wider 16-foot footprint, everything feels open, bright, and comfortable. Easily the most spacious one-bedroom layout we’ve ever built.
Inside, the kitchen is designed for real everyday living, not just weekend use. We worked closely with the clients to plan storage, cabinet layouts, and appliance choices around how they cook and bake:
-
Custom flat-front cabinetry in deep navy blue
-
¾″ birch plywood construction — no prefab or flat-pack shortcuts
-
Butcher block countertops
-
36″ counter-depth fridge
-
30″ range and hood fan
-
24″ dishwasher
-
Large island with prep space and seating
The bathroom is generously sized, which was a priority from day one. It includes a natural stone-style shower base, and a large walk-in shower with clean, modern finishes. The expanded footprint gave them the kind of bathroom you’d expect in a much larger home. Bright, functional, and comfortable.
In the bedroom, the slightly smaller footprint was intentional to maximize the kitchen and bathroom areas. Large windows and plenty of glass bring in natural light, and the wider home layout keeps the room feeling open while still cozy.
For comfort year-round, we had a WETT-certified wood-burning stove installed, giving them that warm winter ambiance and fully insurable installation.
Outside, the home features a crisp, modern combination of white siding, grey roof and trim, and plenty of glass. We also built their matching 8′ × 10′ Peak Sauna, finished in the same siding and style for a seamless look. The sauna uses a HUUM Wi-Fi electric heater, so they can start it from inside the house. A small luxury that gets used a lot.
Overall, the build balances practical living with cozy retreat vibes. It’s warm, bright, thoughtfully designed, and fully tailored to how these clients want to live day to day.
The Installation:
With a 16-foot-wide home and a mudroom addition, the installation required good coordination to keep everything on schedule. Especially with the clients hoping to beat the winter and move in before the cold weather hit.
We transported both the main home module and the mudroom module on the same day, staging them on-site so the crane could lift them into position back-to-back. The access itself was fairly straightforward: the driveway was wide enough, the road approach was clean, and there was plenty of space to maneuver the trucks. The only real challenge was the soft ground, so we took extra care when positioning the crane and trailers to avoid sinking or getting stuck with the heavier equipment.
Once the crane was set, we lifted the main home module first, lined it up on the screw piles, and got it squared and secured. Then we brought in the mudroom addition, craned it into place, and tied the two structures together. By the end of the day, the house was fully set and weatherproofed. All exterior metal, connection points, and envelope layers sealed up before we left site. It was a long day, but exactly the kind of day that keeps a project on track.
The following week, the sub-trades came in to complete all cross-connections:
-
Electrical runs between the modules
-
Plumbing tie-ins
-
HVAC and ventilation connections
-
Final checks on heat, power, and water systems
With those done, our team returned to finish the interior transitions, close up walls and trims where the modules joined, and complete all the final touches that bring the home together visually.
Once the house was wrapped up, we delivered their matching Peak Sauna on our tilt-deck trailer. With the ground levelled and access clear, we were able to slide it straight into place without needing a crane. A clean, smooth placement that added the final piece to the property.
Altogether, the installation went exactly as planned: efficient, well-timed, and with no surprises. The clients were able to move in shortly after, get settled, and start using the sauna multiple times a week. Exactly what they had envisioned for their new life in Edgewood.
Another Successful Delivery!
The clients are now fully settled into their new home and using the sauna multiple times a week. They’ve been gradually adding small touches around the property, but the home itself is already everything they hoped for. Bright, comfortable, and built for the way they want to live. A spacious new start in Edgewood!
