Our Story
We’re two brothers (Shelby and Jaymie) who grew up helping our families construction companies build custom homes.
We always dreamed of building our own homes one day, only to realize the prices of buying land and building on it have doubled.
The dream felt out of reach, but we weren’t about to give up.
So we bought 160 acres of the only land we could afford, off-grid, on top of a mountain, with rough terrain.
No one else thought the space was usable.
We had bills to pay and a dream to build… We knew we needed to make some income.
We setup wall tents as rental units, which went well for about 3 months until they needed an annoying amount of maintenance, were only usable half of the year and weren’t living up to our high standards from all those years of seeing beautiful custom homes.
After fixing them only to then watch them collapse, we yearned for high-quality, self-sufficient structures with longevity that would provide the premium experience we wanted.
We needed something that would withstand the elements of being off-grid in the middle of the bush with +40*C Summers and -30*C winters.
We looked up cabins and tiny home manufacturers…
The ones that were priced well were lacking the quality and design we were hoping for.
And the ones that seemed up to our standards weren’t priced well at all.
Sacrificing quality isn’t in our blood…
So we spent $208,000 on a tinyhome from what we thought was a reputable manufacturer (from a different manufacturer, not us) expecting a great product and a good experience.
It took almost 2 years to get our home.
And when we did…
Our heating system didn’t work in the cold, our floors had huge cracks in them, our front door would swing open all by itself and wouldn’t close, the water lines froze in the winter (because they put the lines to close to the exterior wall), the glass in the shower was out by an inch, and water poured onto the bathroom floor every time we turned the shower on.
Things that are extremely unacceptable when paying a premium.
And, honestly, the customer service was a frustrating experience as we felt they tried to put the blame on us every time something went wrong.
So for the next building we went the other route…
We said screw it, we’ll put up with lower quality for a cheaper price and that way we just know we get something cheap but we didn’t burn a hole in our pockets for it.
We paid $17,000 for an insulated shipping container office space.
It was supposed to take 3 months but it took almost a full year.
And when it finally showed up…
The sliding doors were leaking and water was covering the inside floor, there was only an inch of insulation in the walls and roof and no insulation at all in the floor, and the AC unit wasn’t even mounted or hooked up.
Then they went out of business and we almost didn’t get the second unit we had already paid for.
When we did, it was half finished, covered in mold from sitting out unfinished, and now we need to have our team fix it all.
We couldn’t believe how hard it was to find a business we could put our trust in to deliver even a decent product.
No matter how much we spent.
And honestly I’m not telling you this to complain or bad mouth other companies.
But we found the same thing with saunas.
We call them a “wow factor” because it attracts guests to rental units so they book up more and book at a higher price.
We needed one to be able to increase the rental income so we could continue to bring our dream to life.
We ended up with a cedar barrel sauna. The ones everyone is selling online that you have to build yourself.
Only to realize that after being used for 1 season… It looked like it had been left outside for 10 years, the benches inside and out were falling apart, the shell shrank so much it had gaps all over the place to let cold air in and the hot air never flowed evenly due to the shape.
Needless to say this was our last straw.
Over the years we kept looking for solutions.
And one day we met Josef…
Josef was building cabins and saunas for people and selling them through Facebook Marketplace.
We went for a tour of his shop and chatted more… He’s a true craftsman who loves designing and building epic structures and spaces.
But his operations were growing and he was spending a lot less time in the shop. He didn’t so much like the business side of it.
We, on the other hand do.
We knew we could bring in a ton of value to increase the production and systems needed to provide more people with a product they can continually trust.
Plus we run a business teaching people how to buy land and generate an income on it with rentals and wow-factors like saunas.
We have 7000+ clients in North America who were having the same “quality vs price” issues as we were.
We even have friends making $10k/month in their backyard by offering 2 hour passes for people to come use their sauna and cold plunge tubs.
Getaways, guest cabins and saunas breed deeper relationships with existing friends, attract new friends who are like minded, and allow space to have those deep conversations.
So we bought Elk Ridge Cabin Co. Because we wanted to create the best of both worlds.
A premium done-for-you solution.. Long lasting, self sufficient, beautiful product, at pretty much the fairest prices you’re going to find…
We are looking forward to seeing how we can get you started with your next cabin, studio space, office space, tiny home, or sauna and help you build the life you’re after.
Whether you need more income, want to increase your health, entertain your friends and family and deepen your relationships, or just have secluded office or studio space in the back yard…
We’re just a phone call away!

Shelby Friesen
Business Operations
As a kid Shelby was shipped off every summer to work with his uncles. This was the beginning of his mastery of the metal trades and his talent for making you laugh until you cry...
He spent the beginning of his career helping build custom $15-35m homes in Whistler, BC. Everything from structural steel to high end floating staircases. working as a boiler maker before starting RYD Motorsports where his love for machines and design skill and attention-to-detail garnered national attention.
A mix of partying, crappy food, lots of sugar, and the normalization of an unhealthy lifestyle combusted into severe anxiety and depression.
Shelby was bed-ridden for months and couldn’t work for almost 2 years.
At first he thought he could walk into a doctor and get fixed up with a pill. But This was the opening of his Pandoras box when it came to understanding himself and society around us.
His journey led him to nutrition, fitness, and breathwork which finally allowed him to get back to building an amazing life and businesses.
These days you can find Shelby out for a run, crushing smoothies, spending time with his loved ones, playing around in excavators, and trying to finish his pilots license so he can roam free!
Shelby swears if the aliens don’t come to take him home he will solve anti-gravity and build a ship of his own.

Jaymie Friesen
Head of Marketing
At 10 years old Jaymie was sweeping floors on job sites and grew into building custom homes from the ground up with his dad and grandfather.
Though a valuable skill, it also lead him to see a trap in modern society – working a job you don’t like to pay off the student debt that got you there, and to afford the house you hardly spend time in; running through life unconsciously. This made him dream of a better way to live.
Jaymie experienced fights with depression and spent a year reading, meditating, doing yoga and building the philosophy by which he would live his life. He dreamed of and planned to build a homestead filled with good community.
Jaymie’s most notable business experience is operating a $60m telecommunications software business and founding Habitat Botanicals – a toxin-free bath & beauty brand with compostable packaging that was acquired by Pela in 2020.
Jaymie attended BCIT’s construction electrical program and continued his interests in Physics at the University of the Fraser Valley. He strongly believes in self-education and learning through experience and mentors. As such he's an avid reader and loves to attend mastermind communities where he can level up, such as the Baby Bathwater Institute.
These days you can find Jaymie roaming through the forest smiling at life or educating others.
He swears the aliens will come take him home one day..

Josef Schneider
Head of Construction
Meet Josef, our head of construction and building expert!
His journey began in childhood, working weekends with his father on various construction projects. By age ten, Josef began working full time hours in the construction industry, gaining invaluable experience at an early age building homes in Alberta.
When Josef later moved to Saskatchewan, he got a job working on log homes and custom cabins, igniting his love for crafting unique wooden structures.
After moving to British Columbia, Josef initially ran a gutter company but soon seized an opportunity to purchase a piece of property with a shop, and to start his own business, launching Elk Ridge Cabin Co.
Josef began by building rustic bush cabins for hunting enthusiasts, but as client needs evolved, he expanded offerings to include modern amenities such as kitchens and bathrooms for more contemporary spaces.
Fast forward to current day, Josef oversees every project, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship and client satisfaction. When Shelby and Jaymie took over Elk Ridge, Josef welcomed the chance to focus on hands-on building while enjoying more quality time with his wife and three children.
